Origin of Alzheimer’s San Diego
In December 2015, Alzheimer’s San Diego was established after a decision to disaffiliate from the National Alzheimer’s Association. This pivotal move allowed the former chapter to become an entirely independent organization that is able to tailor programs and services to meet the needs of the local San Diego community impacted by dementia. Since 2015, many of the programs that began at Alzheimer’s San Diego have become a replicable model not just in the county, but nationwide. Alzheimer’s San Diego launched the nation’s first gun lock program for individuals with dementia, enhancing safety for affected families. The Alzheimer’s Response Team, initially a small pilot in East County that expanded to serve most of San Diego County, was so successful at providing in-home crisis support through county and our social workers that the program was officially adopted by the county. Alzheimer’s San Diego’s law enforcement referral program was created to help officers connect families in crisis with necessary resources. Additionally, through COVID and the years that have followed, we’ve evolved and expanded our services to help as many San Diegans as we can.
New Services This Year
During this 9th year, we added a few new programs for the community. The biggest are our services for people living alone with memory loss, which includes ALZ Ally and a new component in the VITALZ program, VITALZ Drives. ALZ Ally provides benefits like short term case management, home safety assessments, food resources, and more. VITALZ Drives now adds transportation help, food bank deliveries, and more. Additionally, Spanish services continued to be expanded with a second support group in Spanish, this one in-person at the Otay Mesa-Nestor Library. View all of our services and check out how they’ve changed to allow us to help more San Diegans.
Call us at 858.492.4400 to speak with one of our dementia experts who are here to help San Diego County residents and/or those caring for someone living in San Diego County (Spanish speakers available). Also check out our free education classes, social activities, caregiver support groups, & more.
