By Caroline Ster
My name is Caroline Ster and I am studying journalism/public relations and psychology at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. In early July of this year, I began working as a Marketing Intern at Alzheimer’s San Diego.
Nobody wants to have a connection to Alzheimer’s, but unfortunately I do. When I was in middle school, I lost my grandpa to Alzheimer’s disease. While I don’t remember much from my middle school years, a family member suddenly not remembering who you are is a moment that never leaves you.
Help change lives. Become a volunteer.
What I do remember is watching my mom dedicate her time and effort towards making my grandpa’s life as easy and enjoyable as possible. Every afternoon she was by his side, and always put on a brave face for me and my little sisters. When I look back on that experience, I wish I could have done more. That is why I volunteer.
I have been loving my experience volunteering at Alzheimer’s San Diego because it has allowed me to spend my time bettering the lives of others while still gaining work experience. I am so proud to play a role in an organization filled with such wonderful people that provide the necessary resources to people struggling with dementia in San Diego.
Through my position, I’ve had the opportunity to edit and produce videos, write content for the Alzheimer’s San Diego blog and more. I’m even continuing to write posts like this one while I’m studying abroad for the semester! While that has been my experience, there are so many ways to get involved and donate your time. I highly recommend it.
