Ben and Steve Garcia have personal connections to dementia and considering they’re brothers, they have dealt with it side by side throughout the years. Both of their grandmothers have shown early signs of dementia and Steve notes that they “have seen the toll that it takes not only on them, but on all [their] loved ones.”
Their company, Patriot General Engineering, is a sponsor at this year’s Rides4ALZ and has been for a few years. As far as why they wanted to get involved with Alzheimer’s San Diego, Ben says “Bottom line is it’s a great cause. We wanted to do something not only because it has affected our own family, but because it touches the lives of so many others,” while Steve adds “We have seen the great work that Alzheimer’s San Diego has done in the past and wanted to do our part to help in their efforts.”
The pair have been riding for about ten years and began participating in Rides4ALZ back in 2017. Steve’s favorite bike is his Harley Davidson Low Rider S because of its combination of power and handling, and Ben prefers his Harley Davidson Dyna, “because of course.” Another reason they enjoy the ride is because “there is a great group of friendly, caring people that we all know from the power industry that participate.” We asked Steve and Ben about what they would say to people who may be hesitant to join in on the fun at Rides4ALZ 2023 and donate to the cause, and here’s what they had to say:
Steve: “This event is for everyone. Riders come from all walks of life and this event showcases that. The giving spirit of Alzheimer’s San Diego and love of riding by the participants brings so many different people together. Because of the tremendous and devastating reach that Alzheimer’s has, donating to this cause will almost certainly help someone or some family you know.”
Ben: “A bunch of guys who ride motorcycles can look intimidating, but this event is a safe, friendly event that is all done in the name of a great cause, so donate!”
Rides4ALZ 2023 is coming up on Saturday, July 8th, so register now while there’s still time. If you’re not a rider and would still like to join us, you can buy a ticket for the after party at AleSmith Brewery!
