Volunteers can be involved in programs like ALZ Companions, VITALZ, social activities, Walk4ALZ, and virtual internships. In this Volunteer Spotlight we focus on Kennedy and Sara, who are virtual interns that have written captivating pieces on unique topics regarding dementia.
Kennedy Heisser
Kennedy Heisser is a fourth year student at San Diego State University majoring in gerontology. She currently works on campus and will be graduating in May 2024. Kennedy decided to participate in Alzheimer’s San Diego’s Virtual Internship Program because she wanted to intern with an organization that directly supports families affected by Alzheimer’s and would allow her to have additional hands-on experience. In her free time, Kennedy enjoys baking, cooking, reading, and going to the gym.
Below you will find the link to Kennedy’s in-depth virtual intern project in which she writes about what plans (financial, physical, caregiving, end-of-life, etc.) she would make if she knew that she would develop dementia later in life.
Sara Ragab
As a passionate senior attending San Dieguito Academy and a current virtual intern with Alzheimer’s San Diego, Sara’s curiosity for neuroscience has been a guiding force, propelling her toward a future where understanding the intricacies of the brain fuel her aspirations. Beyond her academic pursuits, Sarah says “I find joy in exploring the complexities of the mind, unraveling its mysteries, and gaining new experiences. Fueled by the belief that understanding neurological health is pivotal in improving lives, I strive to create a world where compassion and knowledge intersect to bring hope and healing.”
In her intern paper, Sara discusses the critically understudied link between domestic violence, brain injuries, and dementia.
