Ann Owens is a veteran walker.
For her, each Walk4ALZ is a mission. The goal: to find a cure for Alzheimer’s. She’s lived through the pain and heartache caused by this disease, as it weaved its way through her own family. Five of her seven aunts have it. Two have already died.
“I understand the frustration and devastation this disease can cause,” Ann says. “It was tough to watch my aunts – who were once active and healthy – slowly fade away.”
She’s been active with Alzheimer’s San Diego for years, and is even a former board president. She’s all too aware that a cure has yet to be found – that’s one of the reasons she’s so passionate about Walk4ALZ.
“I worry about my own future, since Alzheimer’s runs in my family,” she says. “I know it could happen to me.”
Last year, Ann’s team, Ann’s Army 4 ALZ, was among the top-10 fundraisers. This year, she hopes to raise even more money. To that end, she will be matching all donations to her team from now until August 20th to the tune of 125%, up to $1,000 each. After that, she’ll match all donations 100% until the walk on October 20th, up to $40,000 total.
But you don’t have to match funds to generate support. Over the years, Ann has learned that personal outreach makes all the difference when it comes to inspiring friends, family and coworkers to give.
“I like to send personalized emails to each of my contacts. I’ve found that email works better than phone calls because people can respond on their own time,” she explains. “I always send a thank you email after each donation, and I make sure to add a story to give it a more personal touch.”
