How Team Phamily Began
Tiffany Maycumber (maiden name Pham) first heard of our organization through her friend, Jennifer, when she was working at SDG&E many years ago. After Tiffany’s mother passed away from Alzheimer’s disease in the summer of 2016, it led her to “take a more active role with volunteering, raising funds for research to find a cure, and towards educating our community with the services Alzheimer’s San Diego provides.” That same year, she also started Team Phamily in her mother’s honor and has walked ever since.
As only one of 16 children in her family, Tiffany took turns with her siblings to support their mother while she was living with dementia. She wants other families to have access to a wider support network, and notes that “it’s amazing how many people who are touched by Alzheimer’s in one way or another are not aware of the services provided.” As far as outreach for her team’s fundraising efforts, she relies on word of mouth, and she also has “a vast network of Phamily and friends I send emails to for donations.”
What Walk4ALZ Means
Tiffany continues to be dedicated towards educating the community on dementia and sharing valuable resources, and she appreciates that Walk4ALZ is on the same mission. She makes sure to tell her friends about the programs we offer and refer them to us for support, citing that she appreciates that our staff is “friendly, helpful, [and] knowledgeable.”
Just like Team Phamily walks in honor of Tiffany’s mother, she loves going to Walk4ALZ to see other people walking in memory of their family members and friends. She also enjoys how teams make their outfits festive and creative, she says they “bring a smile to my face.” Tiffany “highly recommends” people interested in the Walk to join because along with being a joyous morning stroll through Balboa Park, it’s a “great way to meet new people to bring attention to this awful disease.”
Help Team Phamily reach their fundraising goal by donating to their Walk page. To sign up (& create a team if you’d like), view our Walk4ALZ website and get ready for the march through Balboa Park on Saturday, October 21st! View all of our free services and programs here.
